Man charged following investigation into hoax bomb and white powder letters

After an extensive police investigation, a 45-year-old Portsmouth man has been charged with 19 offences, which relate to sending a number of letters, some containing a white powder and others having racist content and also planting a hoax bomb in a public place.

Although tests found that the amounts of white powder contained within the letters were benign, the man named as Jefferson Azevedo, has been charged with nine offences under the Anti-Terrorism Crime and Security Act 2001, nine offences under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and one offence under the Criminal Law Act 1977.

He is next due to appear at the City of Westminster magistrates' court on Thursday 24 April 2008.
