National policing units

NETCU and a number of other national policing units work to defeat domestic extremist activity at a national level.

National policing units cooperate with local police forces to tackle domestic extremist crime. Their work includes national, intelligence-led operations and coordinated, proactive and reactive investigation of domestic extremism incidents.

The National Coordinator for Domestic Extremism (NCDE)

The NCDE oversees national investigations in this area of police work, including the work of local forces, as well as that of national units such as NETCU, NPOIU and NDET.

Assistant Chief Constable Anton Setchell is the current NCDE. He was appointed in July 2004.

National Public Order Intelligence Unit (NPOIU)

NPOIU supports the police service throughout the UK to maintain a strategic overview of public order issues, including domestic extremism and the activities of animal rights extremists.

The unit liaises with Special Branch teams within police forces in bringing together intelligence that helps to protect the public from domestic extremism and other national security threats.

National Domestic Extremism Team (NDET)

NDET supports the police service throughout the UK to provide prioritised and coordinated investigations concerning extremist groups and individuals.

Other units

Although not part of the dedicated structure for dealing with domestic extremism, the following also forms part of the national policing response.

National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) coordinates a national network of the counter-terrorist security advisers.

Counter Terrorism Security Advisers (CTSAs), the majority based with Special Branch teams in UK police forces, give protective security advice to organisations and premises.

The roles provide support for a range of community safety issues by providing dedicated counter-terrorist protective security advice to key elements of the critical national infrastructure, businesses and organisations.
