Civil remedies
The term 'civil remedy' refers orders given by a court of law to deal with disputes between individuals or organisations.
Organisations and individuals targeted by domestic extremists can apply to a court to obtain 'civil remedies' to provide legally enforceable protection from the activities of domestic extremists.
The principal civil remedies that organisations have been able to use to deal with domestic extremists are injunctions and anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs).
Injunctions and ASBOs are court orders that typically set out what named persons and groups cannot do.
It is an offence to disobey instructions given by a court of law.
Disobeying an injunction or ASBO is an arrestable offence. A person found guilty of breaching an injunction or ASBO will have a criminal conviction and can receive a custodial sentence.
The courts make the decision to grant an injunction or impose an ASBO.
