The national response
NETCU is one of a number of national policing units at the forefront of the response to domestic extremism.
A National Coordinator for Domestic Extremism (NCDE) oversees national investigations in this area of police work, including the work of NETCU, NPIOU and NDET as well as the local police forces.
The NCDE is developing a national framework for police activity to coordinate the approach to the investigation of domestic extremism-related incidents, particularly where intelligence suggests links between incidents. The national framework will also coordinate liaison between the police service and other criminal justice agencies.
NPOIU liaises with special branch teams within the police service to maintain a strategic overview of domestic extremism-related public order issues.
NDET integrates with other units and organisations to help develop prioritised and coordinated investigations concerning individuals and extremist groups.
Although not part of the dedicated structure for dealing with domestic extremism, the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) also forms part of the national policing response.
